If in Melbourne (or coming here before the 24th of October) I highly recommend a trip to the NGV - Ian Potter Gallery to check out the exhibition of works made by the late Mari Funaki. Her forms are so incredibly powerful I was almost brought to tears by their beauty. I wanted to become lost in the under the sea like world that these creatures appeared to belong to, looking as though they were about to walk/prance off in any moment, I was reminded of the energy and sense felt when viewing the works of Ron Mueck. Im not too sure how I came to this conclusion considering the work of Ron Mueck is so life like it is uncanny, whilst the work of Mari Funaki is created using steel and doesn't appear to perfectly reflect anything real. But there was the sense that they were alive, caught in a moment, waiting and ready to realise their full potential at any moment. If nothing the work of Mari Funaki demonstrates a life dedicated to perfecting her craft and an amazing eye for beauty and form. It is an absolute tragedy that she lost her battle to cancer earlier this year.
